Американская школа - нужен совет
Jan. 13th, 2012 09:15 amСкажите, а если в 10 классе взять два AP курса (Biology & European History) - это самоубийство или жить можно?
Вчера мои дети разговаривали между собой по-испански. И я практически ничего не понимала, только некоторые моменты угадывала скорее. Сразу же ужасно захотелось выучить испанский (я его не знаю вообще, а дети в школе учат.) Интересно, ещё один язык у меня в голове поместится??
Посмотрела вчера вечером две телепередачи - одну французскую, другую квебекскую. Так забавно, оказывается, что квебекский французский мне гораздо легче понимать, чем стандартный французский из Франции. С квебекским мне вообще не приходится напрягаться - ну, бывает, что где-то не расслышу отдельное слово, но в целом очень естественно и легко воспринимается, как будто это вообще не иностранный язык :) А с французским постоянно приходится прикладывать усилие, не получается расслабиться. И ещё квебекский красивее гораздо. Ну, на мой слух, конечно :)

Andrei, I apologize for my eye and face being hurt when you slapped them. I also apologize for kicking and slapping you. That was not the right thing to do in that situation. I guess I just still have to mature more and make the right choices. I'm just doing what my instincts tell me. My instincts are weird. They tell me to do the wrong thing instead of the right. I am sorry. I hope you take this apology. Apology accepted?
P.S. I got a dollar for you! Spend it however you want to.

Christmas morning

Someone has eaten the cookies,
And look what's left under the tree!
There's presents for you and for me.
It was so cute, I didn't even mind it was 6 a.m. :)
UPDATE: it turns out the song is from Phineas and Ferb... of course! :)

Elementary math education
Jul. 27th, 2009 10:46 pmToo often elementary school teachers teach incorrect "mathematics" and also communicate to their students that mathematics is too difficult for ordinary mortals. "If my teachers doesn't understand this, I can't either." Such intellectual and emotional damage is so devastating that even a teacher who is mathematically competent will find it very difficult to undo.

Надо написать годовой отчёт, а он не пишется. Совсем. Уже который час совершенно непродуктивно сижу за компьютером. Ужасно жалко потраченного времени. То, что пока удалось изобразить, выглядит как явный плагиат с моего же прошлогоднего отчёта. Интересно, эти отчёты вообще кто-нибудь читает?

После посещения зубного трудно было жевать твёрдую пищу, так что купила себе жидкий заменитель еды: Slim Fast в баночках. На нем написано, что он контролирует чувство голода в течение 4 часов. Но оказывается, что на мой организм эти напитки оказывают обратный эффект, и мне после них ужасно хочется есть. Даже не просто хочется есть, а одолевает какое-то неудержимое чувство голода. Это как понимать? :)

I can't get this song out of my head. I have always liked the Shrek soundtrack version (John Cale/Rufus Wainwright), and there are other versions by various artists, but I think the original is the most powerful. Beautiful lyrics. I wonder why none of the other cover artists have used the last two verses. Apparently, there are more - Cale once said in an interview that Cohen had faxed him as many as 15 verses? I wish I could get my hands on them.
The video is a bit old-fashioned, so the young youtube reviewers feel compelled to bash it. Whatever :)
